Surbiton Hit Wimbledon for Six as Old Georgians Run Riot in England’s Matchday 8

Six games, 29 goals, and a title race that just got a lot louder.

Surbiton made the statement of the day, beating Wimbledon 6-1. Wimbledon were the early-season leaders, and Surbiton have now put six past them. That’s not a tight top-of-the-table win. That’s a marker. Surbiton led the division into the weekend and they’ve come out of it looking like the team to beat.

Old Georgians weren’t far behind. The reigning champions thrashed East Grinstead 7-0, their second rout in a row after the 8-1 win at Exeter on Matchday 7. Fifteen goals in two games. When the champions hit form like that, everyone else takes notice.

Holcombe joined in with a 6-0 win over Cardiff & Met at home. Cardiff & Met are still waiting for a first win, and on this evidence it won’t come easily.

The other three games were tighter. Hampstead & Westminster edged the University of Exeter 1-0, Reading and Bowdon shared a 1-1 draw, and Beeston drew 2-2 with Oxted. Bowdon’s point matters, it’s their first of the season in the results we’ve confirmed so far.

Matchday 8 results, Saturday 7 November:

  • Beeston 2-2 Oxted
  • Hampstead & Westminster 1-0 University of Exeter
  • Holcombe 6-0 Cardiff & Met
  • Old Georgians 7-0 East Grinstead
  • Reading 1-1 Bowdon
  • Surbiton 6-1 Wimbledon

For our money, the race is now Surbiton’s to lose and Old Georgians’ to chase. The champions are scoring for fun, but Surbiton keep answering every time. That head-to-head, whenever it comes, will be worth clearing the diary for.

Scorers and the updated table weren’t out at the time of writing. England Hockey’s written Matchday 8 round-up is still to come, and we’ll pick the numbers up from it when it lands.
