Egara Put Six Past Barcelona as Spain’s Title Race Waits for Sunday
It was a rough week for Barcelona, and Club Egara made sure it ended badly.
Egara beat Barça 6-0 on Saturday in the only men’s División de Honor game of the day, and the scoreline wasn’t flattering anyone. Barcelona had already lost 3-2 to Atlètic Terrassa on Wednesday in a rearranged Jornada 3 game. Four days later they shipped six. That’s two defeats in a week, and the second one was a hammering.
Egara, meanwhile, will be delighted. Six goals, a clean sheet, and a statement win to open Jornada 8. The rest of the round is played on Sunday, so Egara get to sit back and watch everyone else try to match them.
And Sunday is where the real story is. RC Polo host leaders CD Terrassa in Barcelona at 12:30 CET, and it’s a genuine title-race game. Terrassa sit top, but only just. Polo are one point behind them with a game in hand, so a home win puts Polo top. Polo have been flying, with 5-0 and 8-0 wins over Carpesa and Taburiente in the double round, and their attack is the sharpest in the league right now. Terrassa, by contrast, have wobbled: one point from their last two, a 0-0 draw with Junior and then a 4-3 derby defeat to Atlètic Terrassa.
Atlètic are the form side lurking just behind. They host RS Tenis on Sunday at noon, level on 12 points with Tenis and Sanse Complutense, and three wins on the bounce would put them right in the mix. Junior FC, the other unbeaten side on four wins and two draws, host bottom side Sardinero, who are still without a point. Defending champions Real Club de Campo, fourth on 13 points, travel to Taburiente, who are still chasing a first win of the season.
For our money, Sunday’s Polo against Terrassa game decides who leads the league on Monday morning, and Egara’s six-goal win has just raised the bar for everyone playing in it. The title race in Spain is wide open, and this weekend is the one that starts to sort it out.
