Uddingston Stun Watsonians as Wildcats Stay Top in Scotland
Uddingston are becoming the team nobody in Scotland wants to play right now.
A week after ending Western Wildcats’ perfect record with a draw, they went to Edinburgh and beat second-placed Watsonians 3-1. Watsonians came into the day averaging five goals a game. They’d drawn a blank against ESM Lions last week, and now they’ve lost at home to the side that just keeps taking points off the top two.
That’s the story of the day in the men’s Premiership. The top four all played, and the gap at the top just got a lot more interesting.
Western Wildcats stay top, but they had to work for it. Hillhead arrived at Auchenhowie with their tails up after their first win of the season, an eight-goal rout of Dunfermline Carnegie with Amar Sagoo scoring a hat-trick, and they made the leaders fight all the way. The Wildcats got there in the end, 2-1.
Champions Edinburgh University had the most comfortable afternoon of anyone. They won 6-0 away at Kelburne, a week after putting eleven past Inverleith, and they’re doing it without Jamie Golden, last season’s top scorer, who is out injured. Sam Hunt, Keir Robb and Tom Cahalin all scored in that 11-0 win, and the goals are being shared around nicely.
Grange made it two wins in a row, 4-2 away at bottom side Dunfermline Carnegie, a week after their first win of the season against Kelburne. The goals were flying everywhere else too: Clydesdale won a twelve-goal thriller 7-5 away at Inverleith, and ESM Lions beat Grove Menzieshill 2-0.
For our money, Uddingston are the team to watch now. Points off the Wildcats one week, three points off Watsonians the next. That’s not a fluke, that’s a side that believes it can win the league.
And they don’t have to wait long for another crack at the top. Sunday is Scottish Cup day, and the draw has thrown up Western Wildcats against Watsonians at Auchenhowie, leaders against second, twenty-four hours after their league games. Same two teams, different competition, everything to play for.
