Your Hockey Week, 2-8 November: ACT Medals Decided, Hockey One Roars Back, College Titles on the Line
This is the week the Asian Champions Trophy gets decided, Hockey One comes roaring back, and half of American college hockey plays for its season. Here’s everything that matters, day by day.
Monday 2 November: ACT league finale in Jalandhar
It all starts today. The Asian Champions Trophy league stage wraps up in Jalandhar with three games: China against Bangladesh at 2:00pm, Malaysia against Japan at 4:15pm, and India against South Korea at 6:30pm, all Pakistan time. The semi-finalists are already set, India, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, but Monday decides who plays who in Mohali. India only need a point against Korea to lock up top spot. Malaysia against Japan is the big one for second place, because the winner avoids India in the semis.
Tuesday 3 November: college semi-finals and first rounds
Tuesday is a college hockey day. The America East semi-finals are Lowell against Vermont and Maine against UAlbany, with the final to follow on Friday at the highest remaining seed. The Centennial first round has F&M against Haverford and Ursinus against Dickinson, with the semi-finals on Thursday and the final on Saturday. And in the Landmark, Susquehanna travel to Catholic for a 7pm semi-final in Washington DC, chasing an eighth straight semi-final appearance.
Wednesday 4 November: Mohali semi-finals, Big Ten begins
Wednesday is the biggest day of the week. In Mohali, the Asian Champions Trophy moves to the knockout stage: the 5th/6th playoff at 1:30pm Pakistan time, then the two semi-finals at 4:00pm and 6:30pm. By Wednesday night, we’ll know the finalists.
Across the Atlantic, the Big Ten Tournament starts in Columbus, Ohio. The quarter-finals are Rutgers against Indiana at 11am ET, Maryland against Ohio State at 2pm, and Penn State against Iowa at 5pm, all on B1G+. Top seed Northwestern, who shared the regular-season title with Maryland at 7-1, wait in Friday’s semi-finals. The Empire 8 semi-finals are also Wednesday, with the St John Fisher-Houghton winner travelling to top seed Geneseo and the Brockport-Utica winner going to Hartwick. And in the NJAC, Rowan host the New Paltz-Kean winner at 6pm, chasing another conference tournament title.
Thursday 5 November: ACT medals, A10 and MAC semis
Thursday brings the medals. The Asian Champions Trophy bronze medal match is at 4:00pm Pakistan time in Mohali, and the final follows at 6:30pm. A week and a half of hockey in Punjab comes down to one night.
In the US, the Atlantic 10 semi-finals are Saint Joseph’s against Davidson at 11am and Richmond against VCU at 2pm, both on ESPN+ from Richmond. The MAC semi-finals are UMass against their quarter-final winner at 11:30am ET and Miami against theirs at around 2:30pm ET, with Miami chasing a ninth straight MAC title.
Friday 6 November: Hockey One returns, BIG EAST and Big Ten semis
Friday is when Australia takes over again. Hockey One Round 5 opens with the Grand Final rematch, HC Melbourne hosting the Tassie Tigers in Melbourne. Melbourne lead the men’s ladder on 12 points, the Tigers are part of the three-way tie on nine, and a Tigers win would blow the top of the table wide open.
In the US, the BIG EAST semi-finals are Villanova against UConn at 1pm ET and Old Dominion against Liberty at 4pm ET, both on ESPN+ from Philadelphia. The Big Ten semi-finals are Northwestern against their quarter-final winner at 1pm and the other semi at 4pm, both on BTN.
Saturday 7 November: Hockey One double-header, three college finals
Saturday is stacked. In Hockey One, NSW Pride host Canberra Chill in Sydney in a straight fight for position in that three-way tie on nine points, while Perth host Brisbane Blaze. In the US, the Atlantic 10 final is at noon on ESPN+, the MAC final is at 1pm, the Empire 8 final is at the highest remaining seed, and the NESCAC semi-finals are played at the highest remaining seed after re-bracketing.
Sunday 8 November: Bendigo, and three more finals
Sunday closes the week with the game neither side can afford to lose: the Melbourne Cobras host Adelaide Fire in Bendigo. Both are winless after four rounds, and somebody’s season has to start here. In the US, the BIG EAST final is at noon ET on ESPN+, the Big Ten final is at noon on BTN, and the NESCAC final wraps up the weekend.
For our money, Wednesday and Thursday in Mohali are the centre of the week, but Friday in Melbourne might be the best single game of it. Don’t sleep on Saturday either. That’s a lot of hockey for one weekend.
