Namur Stun the Champions: Waterloo Ducks Beaten at Home as Léopold Stretch Clear in Belgium
Nobody saw this one coming. Bottom side Namur went to the defending champions and won.
Waterloo Ducks, the champions, lost 2-1 at home to Namur on Sunday, a result that turns the Belgian title race on its head. Namur arrived with nothing: seven defeats from seven, a goal difference of minus 23, and no points at all. They leave with three, and the Ducks are suddenly stuck on 16 points with a second defeat of the season. If you want one scoreline that explains why this league is so hard to call, that’s it.
At the top, Léopold did what leaders are supposed to do. They went to Uccle Sport and won 2-0, and that takes them to 20 points from eight games, six wins and two draws, still unbeaten. Braxgata kept the pressure on with a 5-4 win over Dragons in Boom, moving to 19 points, one behind Léopold. So the top two are pulling away, and the champions are now four points off the pace.
Elsewhere, Gantoise and Racing shared eight goals in a 4-4 draw, which lifts Gantoise to 14 points. Herakles and Orée drew 2-2, a result that suits neither side much: Herakles stay on 13, Orée on eight, still the draw specialists with five in eight games. And in the basement scrap, Daring won 3-2 at Beerschot, climbing to five points and dragging Beerschot’s neighbours into the relegation conversation.
The table after Sunday reads: Léopold 20, Braxgata 19, Waterloo Ducks 16, Gantoise 14, Herakles 13, Uccle Sport 12, Racing 10, Orée 8, Beerschot 6, Dragons 5, Daring 5, Namur 3. For our money, the story isn’t just Léopold’s lead. It’s that Namur have just proved anyone can beat anyone in this league, and the Ducks can’t afford another afternoon like that.
