Harvard Edge Yale 2-1 in Overtime to Complete a Perfect Ivy Season
Harvard just don’t lose in the Ivy League. Not this year, anyway.
The No. 5 Crimson edged No. 20 Yale 2-1 in overtime at Berylson Field on Saturday to finish a perfect 7-0 Ivy season and improve to 15-1 overall. Yale’s seven-game winning streak is over, and the Bulldogs finish the regular season 12-3.
Yale gave them everything. The Bulldogs fired nine shots, the most any Harvard opponent has managed since Princeton put up 10 back on 26 September. Yale are now 5-3 in one-goal games this season, and they still haven’t lost a game by more than one goal since last year’s NCAA Tournament first round. That’s not a team that gets blown away. That’s a team that makes you earn it.
And here’s the twist: they get to do it all over again on Friday. Yale are the No. 4 seed in the Ivy League Tournament and they go straight back to Berylson Field to face Harvard, the No. 1 seed, in the semi-finals at 11:30am. The other semi-final is No. 2 Princeton against No. 3 Cornell, and the championship game is on Sunday at noon.
For our money, the rematch is the whole story. Yale have now seen Harvard at their absolute best and still took them to overtime. A neutral might fancy Harvard to do it again. But a team that loses a game like that on Saturday doesn’t walk into Friday thinking it’s beaten. It walks in thinking it’s close.
Princeton’s 3-1 win over Columbia on Friday and Cornell’s 3-2 win over Penn on Saturday are covered in our earlier pieces. The Ivy bracket is now set, and the road to the NCAA Tournament goes through Cambridge.
