Perth v Cobras on Sunday: Thundersticks Look to Climb and the Cobras Chase a First Win
Round 4 of Hockey One finishes in Perth on Sunday, and it’s a game both sides need for very different reasons.
The Thundersticks men sit on three points from three games. They beat NSW Pride 3-1 in Sydney on 24 October, but they’ve lost to the Tassie Tigers and HC Melbourne. A home win over the Cobras would lift them to six points, level with NSW Pride in the chasing pack and clear of Brisbane on three.
The Cobras are still waiting. Three games, three defeats, no points. They lost 3-2 to the Pride, 4-2 to Canberra, and 8-5 to HC Melbourne in a derby where they led 4-2 with 12 minutes left before Melbourne scored six goals in the last 10 minutes. That last one will sting for a while.
What to watch
Perth have the home turf and the form. The Cobras have Abu Mahmood, who scored a hat-trick of penalty corners in that derby defeat, and a team that has shown it can score against anyone. The problem has been holding a lead, not finding goals.
The women’s game is part of the same Sunday card in Perth, with the Thundersticks women looking to stay perfect on the season. That double-header is exactly what Hockey One does best: two games, one venue, and a full afternoon of it.
For our money, Perth should win the men’s game. But if the Cobras score first and settle, this could get very interesting very quickly. A first win changes a season. Just ask any team that’s waited four games for one.
The men’s game is at 3:45pm local time in Perth on Sunday, 1 November, which is 12:45pm PKT.
