Saturday’s Hockey Diary: Murugappa Semi-Finals, Hockey One in Hobart and Adelaide, and a Semi-Final Race Still to Settle in Raipur
Saturday is one of those days where you need two screens and a plan. Semi-finals in Chennai, a goalscoring record on the line in Adelaide, a semi-final line-up still to be confirmed in Raipur, and league games in Ireland and England. Here is how the day stacks up.
Chennai first, because the Murugappa Gold Cup has already given us the tournament of the season. The semi-finals are set for Saturday: Indian Railways meet Indian Navy at 4pm local time (3:30pm PKT), and BPCL face Indian Army at 6pm local time (5:30pm PKT). Railways topped their pool with ten points after Naveen Antil’s hat-trick in the last four minutes rescued a 4-4 draw for PNB on Thursday, and Navy beat the Malaysia juniors 4-2 to take the second spot in the other pool. BPCL finished top of their pool with ten points and seventeen goals, the best attack in the tournament. Army took second with five. Two games, four teams, one final on Sunday. That is a proper Saturday.
Then Australia, where Round 4 of Hockey One rolls on. Hobart hosts the Tassie Tigers against the Brisbane Blaze, women at 7:00am PKT and men at 8:45am PKT. The men’s game has history: the last two meetings were both draws, and both went the Tigers’ way in shootouts, including a wild 6-6 semi-final last season. Then Adelaide at night, and the Blake Govers show. The Fire host NSW Pride, women at 12:00pm PKT and men at 1:45pm PKT, and Govers has scored in every game this season. Another one makes it four from four, and extends his own Hockey One goals record. If you are picking one game to set an alarm for, make it that one.
Raipur is the loose end. The Chhattisgarh Hockey League semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, with the final on Sunday, but the pairings were still to be confirmed after Friday night’s results. The Strikers’ 4-0 win over the Titans and the Bulls’ 6-2 win over the Champions left the Strikers and the Champions tied on seven points, so the last semi-final place comes down to the league’s confirmation. Check the league’s channels before the games, because Friday proved this league does not follow the script.
Elsewhere, Ireland has a lunchtime game worth your attention. Three Rock Rovers host Monkstown in the men’s EY Hockey League at Rathdown at 12:20pm Dublin time on Saturday, with Monkstown chasing a second straight win after Lee Cole’s brace on his return from injury beat Corinthian in Round 5. In England, the Women’s Premier Division plays Round 7 on Saturday, with champions Surbiton hosting the University of Nottingham and Wimbledon meeting East Grinstead as the headline games.
And Jalandhar? Nothing. Saturday is a rest day at the Asian Champions Trophy, which feels almost unfair after Friday. The teams get a day to breathe, and then Sunday brings Korea v Bangladesh, China v Japan, and Malaysia v India under the lights. Rest up. Sunday is the big one.
