Dalhousie Vacate Their Title Over an Ineligible Player, and UPEI Take the Atlantic Spot at the U SPORTS Championship
This is not how anyone wanted to qualify for a national championship. But UPEI will take it.
U SPORTS announced on Wednesday that Dalhousie’s women’s field hockey team used an ineligible student-athlete throughout the 2026 season, and the regional title Dalhousie won has been vacated. Dalhousie disclosed the violation themselves once they learned of it. U SPORTS has declared all of Dalhousie’s games this season forfeits, recorded 5-0, and further sanctions may follow once the disciplinary process runs its course.
So the Atlantic region’s spot at next week’s national championship goes to the UPEI Panthers. They head to Waterloo, Ontario, for the National Bank Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Championship, presented by Farm Mutual Re, at the University of Waterloo’s Warrior Field from 5 to 8 November.
It’s a strange way in, and UPEI won’t care one bit. They know this stage. They hosted last year’s championship, and they were four-time Atlantic champions going into it. Now they open against the hosts, Waterloo, at 6:30pm Eastern on Thursday 5 November (4:30am PKT on Friday). They face Toronto, the Ontario champions, on Friday at 4:00pm Eastern (2:00am PKT on Saturday), and UBC on Saturday at 4:30pm Eastern (2:30am PKT on Sunday). The bronze-medal game is Sunday at noon Eastern, with the gold-medal game at 2:30pm Eastern. Every game streams on CBC Gem and CBC Sports.
Toronto arrive as the team to beat. The Varsity Blues won their 35th OUA title on Sunday, beating York 2-1 in a shootout, and York went into last year’s national final. UBC represent Canada West. Four teams, three round-robin games each, then medals on Sunday. UPEI didn’t earn their place the way they planned. They earned it anyway, and a week from now nobody in Waterloo will be asking how they got there.
