US College Saturday: Shippensburg’s Eighth Straight Win, RPI’s Perfect League Run, and Ohio Wesleyan’s Statement
Three more Saturday results from American college hockey, and all three sides go into next week with something real to play for. A shutout streak, a perfect league record, and a five-game winning run. Not a bad afternoon’s work.
Shippensburg won’t stop winning
No. 2 Shippensburg shut out Mansfield 2-0 on the road, and that’s now eight wins in a row and three straight shutouts. Isabel Rios and Anne Gardner scored 1:14 apart in the second quarter, and that was that. Mansfield managed five shots all game, three on goal.
The Raiders are 13-2 overall and 7-1 in PSAC play, and Friday’s regular-season finale at IUP decides everything. Win it, and Shippensburg clinch the PSAC regular-season title and the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Eight straight wins and three straight clean sheets is exactly the form you want going into a game like that.
RPI finish the league season perfect
No. 25 RPI beat Vassar 4-2 at Harkness Field in Troy, and the record book gets another entry. The Engineers finish 14-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Liberty League play, and they’ve now won 13 games in a row, a programme record.
They set the tone early, earning eight penalty corners in the first quarter alone, and took the lead when Ella Pasquarelli finished a setup from Sophia Brown. Vassar pushed back to make it a game, but RPI’s streak never really looked in danger. Thirteen straight wins, unbeaten in the league, and a programme record to show for it. Whoever draws RPI next week has a problem.
Ohio Wesleyan run away with it
Ohio Wesleyan hosted Wittenberg for the regular-season finale and won 3-0, and the stat sheet is almost embarrassing. The Battling Bishops led 41-3 in shots, 24-1 in shots on goal, and 12-1 in penalty corners. All three goals came in the first quarter, and after that it was a case of how many, except Wittenberg’s defence somehow held the line.
The win stretches Ohio Wesleyan’s winning streak to five games and locks up the NCAC two-seed at 14-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Wittenberg finish 6-10 and 5-5 in the conference. Next up for the Bishops: a home semi-final against three-seed Kenyon on Wednesday at 4pm. On Saturday’s evidence, Kenyon will need a much better defensive day than Wittenberg managed.
