Perth’s Men Make It a Perfect Home Double: 6-3 Over Cobras After the Women Won 4-0
Perth Hockey Stadium got the Sunday it had been waiting for. Hours after the Thundersticks women beat Melbourne Cobras 4-0, the men followed them with a 6-3 win over the same club, and suddenly Perth’s season looks very different.
The men had to work for it. Tom Harvie opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 12th minute, and Cambell Geddes took over from there with two penalty corner goals in the 15th and 20th minutes. Harrison Golding added a field goal in the 36th, and Daykin Stanger finished it off in the 50th minute with a field goal and the challenge conversion that goes with it in this league.
The Cobras did not just roll over. Jacob Whetton scored and converted in the 14th minute, and Rohit Mohil pulled one back from a penalty corner in the 33rd. For a while this was a genuine contest. But Perth had too much firepower, and the Cobras are still waiting for their first win of the season after four games.
This is now two wins in a row for the Thundersticks men. They started the season with defeats in Tasmania and Melbourne, then upset NSW Pride 3-1 in Sydney last weekend, and now they have won their first home game of the season in front of their own crowd. That is a team building something.
The table tells the story of Round 4. HC Melbourne are still perfect on 12 points after hammering Canberra 10-2 on Friday. Tassie Tigers, Canberra Chill and NSW Pride all sit on nine. Perth are fifth on six points, with 13 scored and 13 conceded, while Brisbane sit on three and the Cobras and Adelaide Fire are still pointless at the bottom.
Round 5 starts on Friday with the game of the season so far: HC Melbourne against Tassie Tigers, first against second. Perth host Brisbane on Saturday, the Pride host Canberra, and the Cobras get another shot at a first win when they travel to Adelaide on Sunday. Nathan Ephraums, with 10 goals already, is the man everyone is chasing in the scoring charts.
