Penn State Harrisburg Win First United East Title in Shootout Over St Mary’s
Penn State Harrisburg are United East champions, and they did it the hard way. A 2-1 shootout win over St Mary’s (MD) on Saturday in Middletown, Pennsylvania, after 80 minutes and two overtimes couldn’t separate the sides. Maryland Sports Blog had the full report from the final.
It was a first United East title for Harrisburg, and it ended St Mary’s run of three straight titles. That alone tells you how big a result this is. St Mary’s have owned this conference, and Harrisburg just took it off them.
Alysa McCarthy put Harrisburg ahead in the 35th minute, but Safi Stimely equalised just over two minutes later, and from there neither side could find a winner. Two overtimes, still 1-1, and it came down to the shootout, where Harrisburg won 3-1.
Harrisburg now wait for the NCAA Division III bracket, which comes out on the selection show at 9:00pm ET on Sunday, that’s 7:00am PKT on Monday. St Mary’s season is over, and their three-title run with it. For our money, Harrisburg earned this one. Beating the three-time champions in a shootout, on their own patch of history, is no fluke.
