Mrzywka’s Fourth Weekly Award Caps a Comeback Week for Western New England

Some players just keep finding the net when it matters. Western New England sophomore Mikayla Mrzywka has done it again, picking up her fourth Conference of New England Offensive Player of the Week award of the season, the final weekly honour of the year.

The award came off one game, and what a game it was. The Golden Bears went to Salve Regina and fell two goals behind, then Mrzywka dragged them back into it. She cut the lead in half with just over ten minutes left, Western New England levelled with under eight minutes to play, and then Mrzywka won it with exactly five minutes on the clock. A 3-2 win, from 2-0 down, on the road.

That brace took her to 19 goals for the season, one short of the 20 she scored as a freshman last year, with 43 points from 17 games and five game-winning goals. Those are the numbers of a player who decides matches, not one who just pads stats in blowouts.

The timing matters too. No. 2 seed Western New England host No. 3 Roger Williams in a CNE semifinal on Wednesday at 7pm ET, with the winner going to the championship game against No. 1 Endicott or No. 4 University of New England. Mrzywka walks into that semifinal in the form of her season, and Roger Williams know exactly who they have to stop.

For our money, that’s easier said than done. Players on a run like this don’t cool off on cue, and Western New England at home, with a forward scoring for fun, are a tough out for anyone in this conference.
