No Room for Complacency: Nor Saiful Warns Johor Cup Champions Ahead of Junior World Cup

Malaysia’s juniors have barely had time to enjoy their Sultan of Johor Cup triumph, and their coach isn’t letting them anyway. Nor Saiful Zaini Nasiruddin has told his players straight: don’t get carried away, there’s still a lot of work to do.

“I am satisfied with the team’s overall performance, but we should not get too excited about having won the tournament,” he said. “We cannot afford to become complacent just because we have won the Sultan of Johor Cup. We must continue to improve and perform better in the tournaments ahead, especially with the Junior World Cup coming up next year.”

He’s got a point, and the numbers back him up. Malaysia won their second Johor Cup title in style, winning all four round-robin games (China 3-0, Japan 4-2, Pakistan 3-2 and Canada 6-1) then coming back from two goals down in the final to draw 2-2 with Pakistan and win the shootout 4-3 at Taman Daya Stadium. But the penalty corner count tells a different story: just nine goals from 42 corners across the tournament. At the Junior World Cup, against better defences, that return won’t be enough, and Nor Saiful knows it.

The good news is the talent is clearly there. Goalkeeper Adib Amsyar Hanif, Nabil Irfan Yusof, Dhreeressh Gunaseelan, Adam Asyraf Johari, Gagandeep Singh, Naaveenesh Panicker, Safwan Salihe and Rahuul Fazrien Nazrien all stood out during the Johor run, and this is a squad being built with one eye on the 2032 Brisbane Olympics as well as next year’s Junior World Cup.

There’s no rest for them either. The juniors have travelled to Chennai for the Murugappa Gold Cup, where they’ve been drawn in Pool B alongside the Indian Navy, SAI NCOE-Bhopal, Bharat Petroleum and the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu. Their first game in Chennai came on Monday against BPCL, the Pool B leaders, which is exactly the kind of test Nor Saiful wants: senior institutional sides, no easy games, and a chance to fix that corner routine before the stakes get much higher.

Winning the Johor Cup was the statement. What happens next decides whether it was a peak or a starting point.
