Liga Iberdrola Double Weekend: Club de Campo Stay Top, Junior Stay Perfect, and CD Terrassa Finally Get Off the Mark
Two rounds in two days, and the Liga Iberdrola looks very different from how it looked on Friday. Club de Campo are still top. Junior are still perfect. And CD Terrassa, who arrived at the weekend without a point, left it with two wins and two clean sheets.
Club de Campo defended the lead with two wins over the two Cantabrian sides. They beat RS Tenis 4-2 on Saturday, then closed the weekend with a 9-1 win over Sardinero on Sunday. Thirteen goals in a weekend, and they stay the competition’s top scorers. The Madrid side now have 19 points from 21, six wins and a draw, and they are still unbeaten. That is a serious start.
Junior are the pressure underneath them. The Sant Cugat side beat Valencia 5-1 on Saturday, then won the weekend’s standout game 3-2 against RC Polo on Sunday. Six wins from six, 18 points, one behind the leaders, with a game in hand against Atlètic still to play. If Junior win that one, they go top. The title race is already a two-team story, and it’s only October.
Sanse Complutense sit third on 16 points. They produced the biggest win of the weekend, 10-0 against Sardinero on Saturday, then completed the double with a 2-0 win over RS Tenis. Atlètic Terrassa answered the previous round’s defeat with two wins and no goals conceded: 3-0 against Polo on Saturday, 4-0 against Valencia on Sunday. Club Egara climbed to fifth with two home wins, 5-2 against Taburiente on Saturday, with Natalia Vilanova scoring three, and 4-0 against Real Sociedad on Sunday. Egara are level with Polo on points and ahead of them on goal difference.
The best story of the weekend belongs to CD Terrassa. They arrived without a point and left in ninth place. A 1-0 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, then a 3-0 win over Taburiente on Sunday, with Taburiente beaten 5-2 by Egara on Saturday as well. Two wins, two clean sheets, and a season that finally has something in it. Real Sociedad, for their part, went home from Terrassa without a point and without a goal.
Valencia lost both of their games, 5-1 at Junior and 4-0 at Atlètic, and sit tenth, three points clear of direct relegation. The next round of the Liga Iberdrola can’t be far away, because this one has set up a proper race at the top and a proper fight at the bottom.
