Spain’s Junior Women Start a Four-Match Czechia Series in Getxo Today

Four games in four days. That’s how you find out what a junior squad is actually made of.

Spain’s junior women open a four-match series against Czechia in Getxo, in Bizkaia, on Wednesday, with the games running through to Saturday. The Spanish federation, the RFEH, is billing it as an exhibition series, which is technically true and slightly misleading. At junior level there are no exhibitions. Every coach is picking a World Cup squad in their head, and every player knows it.

Czechia are awkward opponents for this kind of week, too. Organised, physical, happy to sit in and make you break them down. Spain’s juniors like the ball and like the tempo up. Something has to give, four times over.

Series like this rarely make headlines, and then two years later half the players are at a Junior World Cup and everyone pretends they saw it coming. Getxo this week is where that story starts for this group. Scotland’s juniors are busy too — their women host Chile in Glasgow this weekend, and New Zealand named their junior women’s squad this week. We’ll keep an eye on the scores as they land.
