Guangdong Tour Heads to Gojra Today as Pakistan’s U-18s Get Their Turn Against China
Gojra gets its game today. Guangdong, China’s provincial side touring Pakistan, play a Pakistan Under-18 team in Gojra on Wednesday 28 October, and for the youngsters involved, this is the whole point of the tour.
Let’s be clear about what this fixture is. Guangdong are not China’s national team. They’re a regional side, playing departmental, institutional and age-group teams across Pakistan. That doesn’t make today a friendly kickabout. For an Under-18 player, a game against organised, international opposition is exactly the kind of test that shows a coach who can handle the step up and who can’t. The tour has already given Pakistan’s younger players that exposure in the build-up, and Gojra is the last age-group stop before the tour closes.
Guangdong arrive in Gojra on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Pakistan Rangers in Narowal on Monday. Rangers scored through Muhammad Sami from a short corner in the 37th minute, Aamir Sohail in the 45th and Muhammad Hammad in the 55th, after Fong Xiang Xuan had levelled for Guangdong from a penalty corner in the 40th. The wider tour picture is firmly in Pakistan’s favour: the home sides have won four of the first five games, with Guangdong’s only win coming in a penalty shootout against Pakistan Army after a 1-1 draw.
One thing to say plainly: no kick-off time has been announced for the Gojra game in any source checked. The game is at the National Hockey Stadium in Gojra. Don’t go looking for a time that isn’t there. We’ll update when one is confirmed.
After today, one game remains. Guangdong play Pakistan Police in Lahore on Thursday 29 October, then leave Pakistan on 30 October. For our money, today matters more than the finale. A good showing from the U-18s would be the tour’s best advertisement for what these visits are actually for.
