BPCL Put Five Past Tamil Nadu as Mandeep Singh’s Brace Lights Up Murugappa Day 2

Five goals, five different shades of ruthless. BPCL announced themselves at the 97th Murugappa Gold Cup with a 5-1 dismantling of hosts Tamil Nadu that was over as a contest before most of the crowd had found their seats.

It took four minutes. Devindar Walmiki’s penalty-corner conversion opened the scoring, Mandeep Singh doubled it sixty seconds later, and Tamil Nadu were already in trouble. Subhan Abid’s 24th-minute strike made it three, and though Muthukumar pulled one back in the 49th to give the home support something to cheer, Charanjeet Singh (54′) and Mandeep again (57′) put the result beyond any doubt.

Mandeep’s brace bookended the afternoon, and Walmiki’s early corner set the tone: BPCL came to Chennai with a plan and executed it. This is a side that knows exactly what it is.

For Tamil Nadu, the numbers are getting ugly. Nine conceded in two games, after Thursday’s 4-4 shootout with SAI-NCOE. The 4-4 was fun. The 5-1 was a lesson. When you can’t defend a lead and you can’t keep a clean sheet, you’re relying on outscoring everyone, and BPCL just showed what happens when the other team finishes better.

What it means

BPCL go top of Pool B after one game, and they’ve laid down the tournament’s first real marker. Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, have a point from two and a goal difference that’s already working against them. The hosts need wins now, not entertainment.

For our money, BPCL look like the team nobody wants in the semi-final draw. Early days, but five goals in your opener tends to focus minds.
