German Bundesliga Goes Quiet: The Outdoor Season Is Over Until March
There’s no Bundesliga hockey this weekend. Not a postponement, not a break for internationals. The outdoor season in Germany is simply done for the winter.
The first half of the 1. Bundesliga season finished at the start of November, and it went out with a pair of thrillers. Mannheimer HC lost 2-3 to Rot-Weiss Köln on 31 October, then lost 5-6 to Crefelder HTC the next day, per the league’s fixture listing. Two defeats, eleven goals against, and a reminder of how unforgiving this league is when the margins get tight. Mannheim are one of the league’s big names, and they head into the winter with work to do.
The next outdoor Bundesliga fixture isn’t until 20 March 2027. That’s four and a half months without top-flight outdoor hockey in Germany, which sounds like a long time until you remember what fills the gap: the indoor game. German hockey has always run on two seasons, and the indoor Bundesliga takes over through the winter, with its own title race, its own specialists, and its own crowds. It’s a different sport in a lot of ways, faster, louder, and played on boards, but the clubs and the players are the same.
For the outdoor title race, the pause comes at an awkward moment for some and a welcome one for others. Teams that finished the first half in form will want to keep the momentum. Teams that finished it badly get four months to reset, recruit, and come back different in March. The table as it stands will be frozen until then, and the second half of the season will decide everything.
So if you’re looking for German hockey this weekend, look indoors. The outdoor game will be back in March, and when it returns, the run-in starts immediately.
