The U SPORTS Field Is Set: Waterloo Host, Toronto Take the OUA Crown, UBC Return on Top, and UPEI Are Back for a Third Straight Year

The field is set, and every one of the four teams in it got here a different way. A host that earned its place in a Final Four. A champion that needed a shootout and a first title in three years. A conference winner that had waited since 2017. And a team that only learned its fate after another school’s title was taken away.

The 2026 National Bank Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Championship, presented by Farm Mutual Re, runs Thursday 5 November to Sunday 8 November at Warrior Field on the University of Waterloo campus in Ontario. It is the third straight year of the extended format, which debuted at York in 2024. The opening day has Toronto against UBC at 4:00pm EST, then Waterloo against UPEI at 6:30pm EST. Friday brings Toronto v UPEI at 4:00pm and Waterloo v UBC at 6:30pm. Saturday is Waterloo v Toronto at 2:00pm and UPEI v UBC at 4:30pm. Sunday settles it: the bronze-medal game at 12:00pm EST and the gold-medal game at 2:30pm EST. All times are Eastern, ten hours behind Pakistan, so the evening games land in the early hours back home. The whole championship streams on CBC Gem through CBC Sports.

Toronto: a 35th title, the hard way

The Toronto Varsity Blues arrive as OUA champions, and they earned the title the way championships should be earned, with a goalkeeper standing on her head. Toronto beat York 2-1 in a shootout in the OUA final, their 35th OUA title and their first since 2023. Mary Yang was Player of the Match, through regulation and through the shootout, and Kirsten D’Silva scored the championship-winning goal. Toronto will feel like the favourites. They have the most recent big-game memory of the four, and they have a goalkeeper in the form to win a shootout if this comes down to one.

UBC: first conference title since 2017

The UBC Thunderbirds beat the UVic Vikes in the Canada West final for their first conference title since 2017, and they did it without losing a game all season. The clincher was sealed by two first-year players, Puneet Litt and Maia Lawrence, and it was UBC’s third consecutive shutout. An unbeaten run, three straight shutouts, and a title decided by first-years. That is a team arriving with momentum and with no reason to fear anyone in this field.

Waterloo: the hosts earned it

Waterloo did not need the host berth to make this feel deserved. The Warriors finished fourth in the OUA at 6-3-3 and reached the OUA Final Four, and they take the host’s automatic qualification spot at the national championship. They were last at the national championship at York in 2024, and they will have the crowd. Host teams do not always win these things, but they are never easy to beat on their own turf.

UPEI: back for a third straight year, by forfeit

The UPEI Panthers are the Atlantic representative, back at the U SPORTS Final Four for a third consecutive year. They went unbeaten through the AUFHL regular season, then lost the Atlantic final to Dalhousie in a shootout. That should have been the end of their season. It was not. Dalhousie self-disclosed that it had used an ineligible player all season, U SPORTS declared all of Dalhousie’s games 5-0 forfeits and vacated the title, and UPEI advanced in Dalhousie’s place. The eligibility story has already been covered in its own piece. What matters here is that UPEI are a genuinely good side, unbeaten in their league, who had their season handed back to them by someone else’s mistake. They will not feel like guests.
