CHL Final Tonight: Strikers, the Team That Already Beat Titans 4-0, Go for the First Title in Raipur
Sunday night in Raipur decides who lifts the first Chhattisgarh Hockey League trophy. Sanskardhani Strikers against Mainpat Titans, at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium, live on JioHotstar. And if the last week is any guide, don’t go in assuming the favourites win this one.
Start with the obvious. These two have already met this week, and it wasn’t close. On Friday’s rearranged Night 8, the Strikers beat the Titans 4-0. The Titans were chasing top spot that night. They left it with nothing, and the Strikers left it with the result that turned their whole tournament around.
Then came Saturday’s semi-finals, and both finalists won them in very different ways.
The Strikers’ semi was a classic. They beat the league leaders, Nyayadhani Knights, 6-3, and they did it as underdogs. Shahrukh opened the scoring with a flick to the right corner, then completed a hat-trick, the third coming off a rebound after a missed penalty corner. Ashish Tani Purti scored his 13th goal of the tournament from a penalty corner, which made him the league’s top scorer. Arbaj Ali added one in the 24th minute, Aryan Xess scored the fifth, and Om Kumar Yadav finished it off after good work from Nishant Tirkey. The Knights had their moments, Adarsh and Chirag both scored early, but the last quarter belonged to the Strikers.
The Titans’ semi was quieter, and maybe more impressive for it. Pradeep Mor’s side beat Chinglensana Singh’s Bailadila Bulls 3-1. Sandeep Kumar opened it from a penalty corner and that was the only goal of the first half, both defences refusing to give anything away. Prince Bhagat settled it in the second quarter, deflecting home with ten minutes left in the half, then scored again to make it 2-0 in his own column. Ankit Kujur pulled one back for the Bulls right at the end, but by then the final was already decided.
So what wins it tonight? For our money, the Strikers carry the momentum, and momentum is a real thing in a short league like this. They’ve beaten the Titans 4-0 and then knocked out the league leaders 6-3. That’s not luck, that’s a team peaking at exactly the right time. But the Titans have the steadier hand. Their semi was controlled, their defence held firm when the Bulls pushed, and a side that has already lost 4-0 to tonight’s opponents will not need a team talk to know what has to change.
One thing to keep an eye on: the pre-tournament schedule had the final down for 7pm IST (6:30pm PKT), but the latest IANS report confirms the final for Sunday without giving a kick-off time. Check the league’s channels before you settle in, because that time is not confirmed in the newest report. The launch coverage also planned a special women’s exhibition match on final day, which would be a nice touch on Chhattisgarh’s State Foundation Day if it goes ahead.
Either way, a new name goes on the trophy tonight. The Strikers started this league as outsiders and end it one win from history. The Titans started it chasing top spot and end it with a shot at redemption against the only side that truly embarrassed them. That’s a final worth staying up for.
