Wake Forest Sweep the ACC Weekly Honours Again as Butterfield and Schoenbeck Run the Weekend
Some weekends one player carries a team. Wake Forest had two of them, and the ACC noticed. Goalkeeper Ruby Butterfield was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior Mia Schoenbeck took the Offensive award, announced on Tuesday. It’s the second time this season the pair have swept the weekly honours together, and on this evidence, it won’t be the last.
The headline win was against No. 9 North Carolina. Schoenbeck scored all three of Wake Forest’s goals, and all three came the same way: drag flicks off penalty corners, three for three. That’s not luck, that’s a routine a team has practised until it feels automatic, and North Carolina still couldn’t stop it. Butterfield did her part at the other end with four saves, including the game-sealing stop with a minute left. You don’t get many clearer pictures of a goalkeeper earning her team a win.
Sunday was calmer, and just as complete. Wake Forest beat James Madison 4-0. Butterfield made two saves in the shutout, Schoenbeck added an assist and two shots on goal. Across the weekend Butterfield played all 120 minutes, finished with a 0.786 save percentage, and took her season tally to 49 saves, second in the conference. Schoenbeck finished the weekend with seven points and now has 11 goals and five assists for the season. She was last year’s ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and she’s playing like she wants to keep the conversation going.
For our money, the North Carolina game is the one that tells you where Wake Forest are. Beating a top-ten side with your drag-flick routine and your goalkeeper both delivering on the same day is what tournament teams look like in late October.
