Murugappa Gold Cup: Roshan Minz Rescues IOCL With Last-Gasp Corner in 2-2 Karnataka Draw
IOCL were seconds from a defeat that would have ended their tournament. Then the officials took another look, and Roshan Minz didn’t waste the second chance. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd drew 2-2 with Hockey Karnataka on Day 6 of the Murugappa Gold Cup in Chennai on Tuesday, with Minz converting a penalty corner in the final seconds after a review gave IOCL a second attempt. The point keeps IOCL in contention for a semi-final place. For Karnataka, who had fought back from behind to lead, it will feel like two points thrown away.
IOCL started the better side. Talvinder Singh broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, pouncing on a rebound after Gurjinder Singh’s drag-flick was blocked by the Karnataka goalkeeper. Karnataka stuck at it, and B. Abharan Sudev levelled in the 28th minute from a well-worked team move. Two minutes after half-time, C.J. Rahul put Karnataka ahead and the game looked like it was slipping away from IOCL. It nearly did. Affan Yousuf missed a golden one-on-one chance in the 55th minute, and IOCL’s frustration was starting to show. Then came the late penalty corner. The first attempt came to nothing, the officials reviewed it, and a second corner was awarded. This time Minz made no mistake.
That’s the kind of goal that changes a week. IOCL came into the day needing something from this game after a mixed start to the tournament, including a 3-0 defeat to Indian Railways. A draw isn’t a win, but it keeps them alive with the semi-finals still to play for. Karnataka, meanwhile, have now drawn with Punjab National Bank and IOCL and lost to Railways, and their margin for error is gone. The final is on 1 November at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai, with free entry for spectators. IOCL will need to win their remaining pool game and hope the results around them go their way. After Tuesday’s finish, you wouldn’t bet against them finding a way.
