US College Sunday Leftovers: Providence Stun Fairfield in Overtime as Centre Cruise Past Roanoke
Two Sunday results slipped through the cracks of the big weekend roundups, and both are worth a mention before conference tournament week takes over.
First, the upset in Providence. Fairfield’s six-game winning streak is over after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Friars. The Stags had to dig deep just to get there, rallying from two goals down and tying the game with only 51 seconds left on the clock. But Providence owned the extra period, won it off a penalty corner, and Bo Martina scored the winner. It was Fairfield’s second straight overtime game, and this time the late drama went against them. The Stags still outshot Providence 15-13, and goalkeeper Georgia McDade made three saves, but the streak is gone. Fairfield close the regular season on Friday at nationally ranked UConn at 3pm, which is a brutal way to try to bounce back.
Then there’s Centre, who closed their weekend the right way. The Colonels won 4-1 on the road at Roanoke, with four different players on the scoresheet: Tori Drepaul, Ashley Hamilton, Abbie Woolley and Olivia Vonderheide. Roanoke threw everything at them late, including a run of penalty corners, and got one back through Maddy Holmes, but Addie Sheridan and the Centre defence held firm and the comeback never really got going.
Centre are back home for Senior Day on Saturday 31 October at noon. Fairfield, meanwhile, will know that a six-game streak counts for little if the next one goes the wrong way too.
