Saturday’s Hockey, Sorted: A Johor Cup Final, the Bundesliga’s Game of the Season and Six Games in England
Saturday is stacked. A continental final, a top-of-the-table German clash, a Spanish double round, six games in England and Hockey One rolling on. Here’s everything that matters, in one place.
The main event: Johor Cup final day
Bronze: Japan v Canada, 2:05pm PKT. Final: Malaysia v Pakistan, 5:05pm PKT.
This is what the whole week built to. Malaysia, unbeaten and ruthless, against a Pakistan side that survived the tightest of deciders on goals scored. The hosts have been the tournament’s best team; Pakistan have been its great survivors. Finals don’t always go to the best team of the week. Sometimes they go to the team that knows how to win ugly. We’ll find out which kind this is by about 7pm.
Germany: Alster v Polo is the game of the weekend
Club an der Alster v Hamburger Polo Club, 14:30 CEST (5:30pm PKT). Leaders Polo, fresh from going top last weekend, travel to an Alster side that just put four past TSV Mannheim. Win, and Polo make a statement. Lose, and the title race concertinas. Elsewhere Saturday: Münchner SC host Mannheim, TSV Mannheim face Berliner HC (both 14:30), and DSD Düsseldorf take on Krefeld at 15:30. Friday night’s Köln v Mülheim under the lights sets the table.
Sunday belongs to the women: the Volvo ERB Topspiel, Rot-Weiss Köln v Düsseldorfer HC at 12:00 CEST, live on Dyn.
Spain: the double round begins
Jornada 6 of the División de Honor on Saturday, Jornada 7 on Sunday, twelve games in 48 hours. Saturday’s card: Real Club de Campo v RS Tenis (12:00), then CD Terrassa v Junior, RC Polo v Carpesa and Atlètic v Egara (all 13:00), with Sanse v Sardinero and Barça v Taburiente at 15:00. The big one is Terrassa v Junior — first against third, both unbeaten. Then they all do it again on Sunday, including the Terrassa derby.
England: six games, two perfect records
The men’s Premier Division plays a Saturday-only Round 5: Old Georgians v Reading (14:30), East Grinstead v Cardiff & Met (15:00), Wimbledon v Exeter and Surbiton v Bowdon (both 15:30), Hampstead & Westminster v Oxted (16:00), Holcombe v Beeston (17:00). Surbiton and East Grinstead are both four from four. After last weekend — six away wins out of six — home advantage clearly isn’t worth much.
Australia: Hockey One rolls on
After Canberra’s Hobart double on Friday night, Saturday brings NSW Pride v Perth Thundersticks in Sydney (men 1:00pm AEDT, women 2:45pm) and Brisbane Blaze v Adelaide Fire (men 4:00pm AEST, women 5:45pm). Sunday is the one everyone circled: the first Melbourne derby, Cobras v HC Melbourne.
The rest
Scotland’s Premiership has Watsonians v Western Wildcats headlining Saturday. Ireland’s EY Hockey League plays Round 6. The Murugappa Gold Cup continues in Chennai with Day 3.
One day, four continents, too much hockey. The good kind of problem.
