Buenos Aires Do the Double at the Argentino de Selecciones, Men Winning It on Shoot-Outs

Buenos Aires went to Córdoba and took everything home with them.

The Campeonato Argentino de Selecciones, Argentina’s provincial championship, ended on Sunday with the capital’s sides winning both finals. The women beat Litoral 1-0 to make it six straight titles, which at some point stops being a streak and becomes just how the tournament works. The men had to work harder for theirs. Their final against hosts Córdoba finished 2-2, and Buenos Aires won the shoot-out 4-3.

There’s a particular cruelty in losing a home final on shoot-outs, and Córdoba got the full serving of it. Two-all, your crowd, your tournament, and then the lottery goes the other way. Buenos Aires won’t care. Shoot-outs still count, and doubles count double.

The Selecciones matters in Argentina because it’s where the national picture gets scouted in public. Provincial pride is the surface story. Underneath it, every coach in the building is watching who handles a final. Buenos Aires handled two of them in a day, one with a clean sheet and one with nerve. That’s a decent summary of why they keep winning this thing. The club game there is moving too — Vélez just won promotion back to Primera A.
