First Against Second, and Peillat Is Back: Polo v Mannheim Is the Bundesliga Game of the Weekend

German hockey’s double weekend saves its best for last.

On Sunday in Hamburg, Hamburger Polo Club play Mannheimer HC. First against second. Both on 17 points, split only by goal difference, after a Saturday that set this game up perfectly.

How Saturday built this

Polo were ruthless. They beat TSV Mannheim, the other Mannheim club, 5-1, and the game was basically done inside six minutes, Timothy Brand scoring in the 1st and 6th. Laurens Halfmann and Niklas Plattenteich, twice, finished the job. Polo didn’t just win, they sent a message across the city divide to Sunday’s opponents.

Mannheim’s Saturday was harder and, in its own way, just as telling. They led 4-1 at Club an der Alster, got dragged back to 4-4 by a three-goal Alster burst in eight minutes, and still took the extra point by winning the shootout. Sides that want titles find a way to take something from days that go wrong. Mannheim did.

So here we are. Mannheim top on goal difference, Polo second, Rot-Weiss Köln a point behind in third and waiting to pounce on whoever slips.

The Peillat watch

And then there’s the name on Mannheim’s squad list that changes how you think about their corners.

Gonzalo Peillat was back in the Mannheim squad on Saturday, wearing No. 2, almost a year after a cruciate ligament injury. The official match report at Alster doesn’t credit him with a goal, and we’re not going to guess that the one unattributed Mannheim goal was his. What matters is simpler than that. One of the best drag-flickers the game has had is fit enough to be picked again.

If he steps up to a corner on Sunday, Polo’s runners will know exactly what’s coming. Knowing and stopping are different things.

What decides it

Polo at home, on a roll, scoring early and often. Mannheim with the deeper habit of grinding out results and, now, a returning weapon at corners. For our money it’s the tightest call of the European weekend, and it could easily end up in a shootout like both clubs have already had this season.

Whoever wins it outright doesn’t just go top. They’ve beaten the other title favourite in their own run of back-to-back games, and that sticks in a dressing room for weeks.

Sunday’s other Bundesliga games

The rest of the card isn’t filler either. Club an der Alster host TSV Mannheim, two sides who both had draining Saturdays. UHC Hamburg, winners two weeks running, get Berliner HC. Harvestehuder, who ended a four-match losing run by hammering Berlin 5-1, go to Münchner SC. Crefeld, fourth on 14 after Masi Pfandt’s Friday hat-trick, host third-placed Köln in a game that matters almost as much as the top match. And bottom side DSD Düsseldorf travel to Uhlenhorst Mülheim still chasing a result their football keeps nearly earning.

Saturday gave us 30 men’s goals and a shootout. Sunday’s got the top two playing each other. This league isn’t slowing down for anyone.
