Hamburger Polo Take a One-Point Lead Into the Bundesliga Winter Break
One point. That’s all that separates Hamburger Polo Club from Rot-Weiss Köln at the top of the men’s Bundesliga, and the winter break has frozen the title race exactly where it is.
Polo sit on 27 points from 10 games. Köln are a point behind on 26. UHC Hamburg are third on 23, Crefelder HTC have 22, and Mannheimer HC have 21 from 11 games. It’s the tightest the table has looked all season, and it stayed that way because of what happened on the final weekend.
Polo nearly threw it away. Berliner HC beat them on a shootout, 4-3, after the game finished 2-2. Nic Woods put Polo ahead, Nico Kirstein equalised in the 15th minute, Kane Russell restored Polo’s lead, and Loic Berlinhof made it 2-2 in the 37th minute. BHC held their nerve in the shootout and took the bonus point.
Köln couldn’t take advantage. They drew 2-2 away at TSV Mannheim and won the shootout bonus themselves, but that left them exactly where they started: one point behind Polo. A win in regulation would have flipped the table. They didn’t get it.
For our money, that’s the story of this season so far. Polo have been the best side, but only just, and they’ve left the door open. There’s even a refix against Köln still pending, which means the two title rivals will meet again with the table this tight. The outdoor season resumes on March 20, 2027, and that game will be circled in both camps.
Until then, it’s indoor season. The indoor Bundesliga starts on November 28-29, with the quarter-finals on January 23-24 and the Final4 on January 30-31. Polo, meanwhile, go straight into the EHL finals at the FINAL8 stage on March 25, 2027, so their spring is already stacked.
