Delaware Come From Behind to Beat Towson 3-2 on Senior Day

Towson had them. For a half, anyway.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead into half-time at Delaware on Saturday, in their final game of the regular season. Then the Blue Hens did what they’ve done to Towson for years now: they found a way. Two goals in the third quarter turned it around, Delaware won 3-2, and that’s now 15 straight wins over the Tigers and 20 in a row at home against them.

Towson actually thought they’d scored after just 98 seconds, but the goal was waved off for a foul. Anouk Westerink did get on the scoresheet later, her seventh goal of the season and her first from a penalty stroke. But Delaware’s third quarter was the game. Linde van Leeuwen and Alexa Michielsen scored, Michielsen’s from a penalty corner for her fifth of the season, and then Penelope Kousouris broke away in transition in the 40th minute, took a pass from Fiest, beat a sliding goalkeeper and scored the winner, her second of the season.

Gabrielle Prentice made four saves in the Delaware goal, and the Hens saw it out in a scoreless fourth quarter even after Towson pulled their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player.

Delaware finish 9-8, Towson 7-11, and the Hens’ season isn’t over: they host the MPSF Tournament on 6-7 November, with Queens (NC) and UC Davis coming to Newark to crown a conference champion. Delaware finished 3-1 at home this season, their best home record since spring 2021. Senior day, comeback win, tournament to host. Not a bad way to sign off the regular season.
