Cornell Win a Philadelphia Thriller 3-2 at Penn as Ramsey Scores With 66 Seconds Left, American Rout Lehigh 4-0

Cornell saved the best until last in Philadelphia. Senior Julia Ramsey, the Big Red’s all-time career assists leader, scored the winner with 1:06 left to beat Penn 3-2 at Ellen Vagelos Field on Saturday, and Cornell had to survive a fourth-quarter onslaught to get there.

Penn struck first. Riley Thomson’s shot from the top of the circle beat a screened Martha Broderick in the first quarter. Cornell answered within a minute, Annabel Cheveley’s penalty-corner shot tipped by a defender over Penn keeper Ruby de Frees, with Delaney Keegan and Ramsey on the assists. Then Stella Thibeault dribbled into the circle and let fly from near the top at 25:49, and Cornell went in 2-1 up at half-time.

Penn weren’t done. Thomson scored her second at 50:23 in the fourth, from a penalty corner assisted by Maxi Aranowitz and Jazmin Borensztein, and the Quakers earned six fourth-quarter corners in total. Cornell killed three straight in the closing minutes, Broderick making six saves in the period alone, and then Ramsey went down the right endline at 58:54 and scored from a tough angle. Penn pulled de Frees for an extra attacker, but Broderick stopped Victoria Manzur with seven seconds left. Final numbers tell the story of the pressure: Penn outshot Cornell 18-10, corners 7-4, Broderick finished with 11 saves, de Frees five.

Cornell finish 7-9 overall, 4-3 in the Ivy League, with momentum heading into next weekend’s Ivy League Tournament. Their seed and semi-final opponent still depend on Saturday’s Harvard-Yale result, which is why that game matters far beyond Cambridge.

American’s afternoon was far less stressful. The Eagles beat Lehigh 4-0 in Washington in their regular-season finale. Jordan Reicher and Nora Tromble put American 2-0 up in the first quarter, and Lehigh keeper Kate Burgess made six first-half saves to keep it there at the break. Elle Ridge made it 3-0 in the third, and Kaleigh Missimer added a penalty-stroke goal minutes later. Burgess finished with eight saves, Teagan Harmon kept Lehigh out at the other end, and American close at 10-7, 4-2 in the Patriot League, with Lehigh finishing 2-15, 0-6. The Patriot League Tournament runs 5-7 November at Lafayette, the top seed, with Boston University, American and Holy Cross completing the field.

One more Saturday note from the awards list: UAlbany’s freshman Quinty Reumer was named America East Rookie of the Year on Saturday, also making the First Team and All-Rookie Team, as UAlbany collected nine end-of-season honours. Vermont led the league with 12, UMass Lowell had 10. UAlbany, the No. 3 seed, host Bryant in an America East quarter-final on Sunday.
