Sunday 1 November: ACT’s Top-Spot Showdown, CHL Semi-Finals and the Murugappa Final
If you only watch hockey on one day this weekend, make it Sunday. Three tournaments reach their decisive day at once, and Europe throws in a full league card for good measure.
Start in Jalandhar, where the Asian Champions Trophy’s penultimate pool round brings three games that shape the semi-final race. South Korea against Bangladesh opens at 2:00pm PKT, and Korea need a win to stay in the semi-final hunt after finally getting off the mark against China on Friday. China against Japan follows at 4:15pm PKT, and that’s the one that shapes the last four: Japan go through with a win, China have to win just to stay alive. Then the main event at 6:30pm PKT, Malaysia against India, two unbeaten teams, top spot on the line, a home crowd behind the hosts. India lead the table on goal difference, plus 19 to Malaysia’s plus 8, so a draw keeps India top. Monday brings the final pool round, and the semi-finals move to Mohali on Wednesday 4 November.
Then jump to Chennai, where the Murugappa Gold Cup final is played on Sunday. The finalists come from Saturday’s semi-finals: Railways against Navy, and BPCL against Army, with Railways chasing a fourth straight title. Whoever lifts it on Sunday earns it the hard way.
And in the evening, Pakistan time, the CHL semi-finals take centre stage: Knights against Strikers at 5:00pm PKT, then Bulls against Titans at 7:00pm PKT, with the winners going through to a final whose date is still unconfirmed. Knights finished the league stage top on 11 points, and the semi-final switch from Saturday to Sunday has already been one of the week’s talking points.
Over in Australia, the Hockey One weekend wraps up with Perth Thundersticks against the Melbourne Cobras on Sunday, the last game of Round 4. Perth’s women have been among the form teams of the season, and the Cobras are still finding their feet as the league’s newest franchise.
Europe plays a full Sunday card too. In the Netherlands, the women’s Hoofdklasse Round 7 is headlined by SCHC against Den Bosch: SCHC unbeaten in 42 league games, Den Bosch on 12 straight wins, and Yibbi Jansen two goals short of 150. The men’s Round 7 card runs alongside it. In Belgium, the men’s title race continues with Léopold at Uccle, the Ducks hosting winless Namur, and Braxgata against Dragons, while the women’s league plays its own Sunday card.
Six competitions, one day, and by Sunday night we’ll know the Murugappa champions and the CHL finalists, and the ACT race will be nearly set. Clear the diary.
