Frye Wins It in Overtime as Monmouth Beat Northeastern 3-2 and Share the CAA Title

Nothing happened for 45 minutes. Then everything happened at once.

Monmouth’s regular-season finale at Northeastern was scoreless going into the final 15 minutes of regulation. Four goals followed before the clock hit zero, Northeastern led 2-1 after scoring in the 47th and 50th minutes, and Monmouth somehow dragged it back to 2-2 to force overtime.

Eight minutes into the extra period, Milla Frye ended it. She took a touch just inside the circle and ripped a shot into the top left corner. Northeastern goalkeeper Aiko Price got a piece of it but couldn’t keep it out. It was Frye’s team-leading 14th goal of the season, and it was worth a share of a league title.

Three teams, one title

The win lifted Monmouth to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the CAA, and gave the Hawks a share of the regular-season title for the fourth time in five seasons. Drexel, Fairfield and Monmouth all finished 5-1, and goal difference in league play split them. Fairfield and Monmouth were both plus 13, Drexel plus 12, and Fairfield took the top seed because they beat Monmouth 3-2 in overtime on 23 October.

So the seeds are Fairfield No. 1, Monmouth No. 2, Drexel No. 3 and Northeastern No. 4. The CAA Tournament is at Drexel’s Buckley Field in Philadelphia on 4 and 6 November. Northeastern face Fairfield at noon on Wednesday, and Monmouth face hosts Drexel at 3pm. The final is Friday at 3pm, all streamed on FloCollege.

Northeastern actually outshot Monmouth 13-10 and won the penalty corner count 7-4, with Charlie Bowman making seven saves for the Hawks.

For our money, the Drexel semi-final is the tie of the round. Hosts, the team that just beat Monmouth’s title rivals in the tiebreak, against a side that keeps finding late goals. Don’t be surprised if it goes to overtime again.
