Harvard v Yale: A Perfect Season, a Title Share, and Princeton Watching From Afar
Saturday’s Ivy League finale has something for everyone except a neutral. Harvard host Yale at Berylson Field in Cambridge at 1pm ET, live on ESPN+, and three teams’ weekends hinge on it.
Harvard’s side of it is clean. The No. 5 Crimson are 14-1, riding the nation’s longest active winning streak at 12 games, and they wrapped up their second straight Ivy League regular-season title last weekend with a 4-0 shutout of Columbia in New York. That win also secured hosting rights for next weekend’s Ivy League Tournament. Beat Yale, and the regular season is a perfect 7-0 in conference play. Harvard have already beaten five ranked teams this year, including No. 8 Princeton, No. 9 UConn, No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 11 Syracuse, so the favourite tag isn’t a guess.
Yale’s side is messier, and more interesting. The No. 20 Bulldogs are 12-2 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League, and they punched their own tournament ticket with a 2-0 shutout of Penn last week, their sixth straight win at the time. They visit Quinnipiac on Sunday too, so the weekend is a double. But Saturday is the one that echoes: a Yale win doesn’t just dent Harvard’s perfect season, it hands Princeton a share of the Ivy League title after the Tigers beat Columbia 3-1 on Friday night.
And Princeton? They’ll be the most interested spectators in the country. Locked in as the tournament’s No. 2 seed, they’ll play either Yale or Cornell in the semi-finals in Cambridge next weekend regardless of Saturday’s result. The only question is whether they arrive as co-champions.
For our money, Harvard’s streak and home field make them hard to pick against. But Yale have already won six on the bounce once this season, and spoiling a perfect season with a title share on the line for someone else is exactly the kind of motivation that travels well.
