Cyclone Postponement Sets Up a Semi-Final Shootout in Raipur as CHL Night 8 Moves to Friday

Thursday night in Raipur never happened. Cyclone Arnab forced the Chhattisgarh Hockey League to postpone both Night 8 games, and the league moved them to Friday instead. The semi-finals are still set for Saturday, and the final for Sunday. That leaves Friday as a one-night semi-final race, with everything decided in two games.

The fixtures are the same as Thursday’s were meant to be. Sanskardhani Strikers against Mainpat Titans, and Chakradhar Champions against Bailadila Bulls. No kick-off times were given in the league’s postponement announcement, so this piece does not invent any. Check the league’s channels on the day for times. The matches stream on JioHotstar, as the league’s games have all tournament.

Start with the Titans, because their game is the biggest of the night. They sit on eight points, three behind the Nyayadhani Knights on 11. A win over the Strikers takes them level with the Knights at the top. A draw takes them to nine, still in the thick of it. A defeat leaves them on eight, and then they are watching the second game very closely indeed.

That second game is where the chasing pack lives. The Champions are on seven points. Win, and they go to 10, ahead of the Titans if the Titans lose, and right in the semi-final mix. The Bulls are on five, after their first win of the season on Night 7, a 1-0 win over the Rajdhani Royals. Win again, and they go to eight, level with the Titans’ current total, and the permutations get messy in the best possible way. The Strikers are on four. Win, and they go to seven, level with the Champions’ current total, and they drag the Titans back towards them.

Night 7 showed how tight this league is. The Bulls beat the Royals 1-0 for their first win, with Himanshu named player of the match. The Knights and the Titans drew 1-1, Ketan scoring his sixth goal of the tournament for the Knights before Mohit Nayak levelled it in the fourth quarter. The Knights are already through to the semi-finals. Everyone else is playing for the other places, and Friday decides who gets them.

For our money, the Titans have the most to lose and the most to gain. They were the side that had to come from behind against the Knights, and Mohit Nayak’s equaliser kept their night alive. The Strikers, who have won once all tournament, are dangerous precisely because they have nothing to protect. A team with nothing to lose, on a rearranged night, after a cyclone, is not a team you want to need a result against.

Friday in Raipur is not a footnote to a postponed night. It is the night the semi-finals are decided. Two games, four teams, and a table that could look completely different by the end of it.
