The First Melbourne Derby: Champions HC Melbourne Meet the Cobras on Sunday
Sunday gives us something Hockey One has never had: a Melbourne derby. The Cobras host HC Melbourne at the State Netball and Hockey Centre — women at 3:30pm AEDT (9:30am PKT), men at 5:15pm AEDT (11:15am PKT) — and for a club that only joined the league this season, there is no bigger way to announce yourself than beating the neighbours.
The women’s game might be the pick of the round. The Cobras are unbeaten, and their captain Claire Colwill has made a habit of deciding games late — she scored in the final four minutes of both matches so far, the winner on debut and the clincher against Canberra. HC Melbourne’s women arrive in a very different mood: they just lost the Grand Final rematch to Perth and need a response. Unbeaten newcomers against wounded finalists. That’s a proper derby ingredient list.
The men’s game flips the script. HC Melbourne are the back-to-back champions and they’ve started like it: two wins, ten goals, with Cooper Burns and Duncan Jackson scoring three each. The Cobras men are still chasing a first win. On paper this is the most one-sided game of the weekend. But derbies don’t read paper, and the Cobras would love nothing more than making their first Melbourne derby the night the champions finally slipped.
It all streams live and free on 7plus in Australia, and internationally on the Hockey One Global Pass.
Our take
The league expanded to eight teams this season precisely for weekends like this. A derby gives the Cobras instant identity — win, and they’re Melbourne’s team; lose, and they’re still the new kids. For our money, the women’s game is where the drama lives. Colwill keeps scoring late, and late winners in derbies become club folklore fast.
