Today in Doha: the FIH’s 50th Congress Votes on Hockey’s Next Decade

Hockey’s biggest decision-making day of the year is today. The 50th FIH Statutory Congress meets in Doha, with the sport’s direction for the next decade up for discussion and a vote.

The headline item is the Fit for the Future roadmap. It was the subject of last night’s forum, where the global hockey community committed to the plan, and today the Congress takes it forward alongside the Made For Hockey 2032+ strategy, the FIH’s long-term blueprint that runs to Brisbane and beyond. The idea, in plain terms: modernise how the sport is run, funded and presented before the 2032 Olympics put hockey under the biggest spotlight it’ll ever get.

There’s also business to finish on the governance front. Elections for the FIH Executive Board are on the table, with nominations already received, and outgoing board members Maureen Craig-Rousseau, Elizabeth King, Erik Cornelissen and Piotr Wilkoński were thanked during the week. New faces at the top table means new priorities, so the votes matter beyond the titles.

And it all lands in a week when the sport has been selling itself hard. Last night’s Hockey Stars Awards crowned Argentina’s Sofía Cairó and Tomás Domene as the Players of the Year, with Germany’s men collecting the coaching and rising-star honours after defending their World Cup. The message from Doha all week has been the same: the sport’s in decent shape, but the leaders know it needs to move faster.

When do we know the outcomes? The FIH holds a post-Congress press conference at 4pm Doha time, 6pm Pakistan time, which is when the decisions, elections and any announcements get confirmed. We’ll have the full story from there.

Our take

These congresses usually read like formalities. This one’s worth watching. The 2032+ strategy is the first long-term plan hockey’s had that actually names an Olympic horizon, and board turnover means it gets tested by fresh eyes. If the FIH means what the forum said last night, that the world has moved, today’s votes need to show it.
