China Take Fifth at the Asian Champions Trophy With a 3-1 Win Over Bangladesh
China did the damage early and never let Bangladesh back into it. Three goals in the first 22 minutes settled the fifth-place playoff at Mohali on Wednesday, and even a late Bangladesh reply could not change where this one was heading.
Yulai Zhao opened it in the 10th minute with a field goal, Yaqi Wang doubled the lead eight minutes later, and Chongcong Chen made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. That was the game, really. Bangladesh had drawn 1-1 with these same opponents on Monday, so they knew they could live with China. On Wednesday they were chasing it from the 10th minute on.
Credit Bangladesh for not folding. Md Shohanur Rahman pulled one back from a penalty corner in the 48th minute, and that goal at least gave the closing stages something to play for. It was not enough to spark a comeback, and China closed out a 3-1 win that confirms the final placings at the bottom of the table.
The result fits what the league stage told us. China finished fifth on two points, Bangladesh sixth on one, and neither side won a league game. China were the 2024 runners-up, so fifth will sting, but it is a better ending than the wooden spoon. Bangladesh came into this tournament as a late replacement and leave with that Monday point against China and this late consolation goal to show for it. They scored only twice in five league games, so finding the net again in Mohali mattered, even in defeat.
For China, the win is a small piece of momentum to take home. They were in every league game, they just could not turn draws into wins. On Wednesday they finally did, and they did it by killing the game in the first quarter. That is the lesson they will take from Punjab: start fast, and the rest gets a lot easier. The result is recorded on the tournament’s match listing.
