Hoofdklasse 2026-27: The Dutch League Season Is Under Way — Clubs, Champions and What to Watch
Rotterdam are the team to beat in Dutch men’s hockey this season. In the Netherlands, that’s a heavy title to carry.
The Hoofdklasse is back for its long autumn-to-spring run, and for our money it’s the strongest domestic league on the planet. Twelve men’s teams, twelve women’s teams, and a queue of internationals in just about every squad.
The clubs, and who’s holding the trophies
The men’s line-up reads like a roll call of Dutch hockey history: Amsterdam, Bloemendaal, Den Bosch, Kampong, Oranje-Rood, Pinoké, SCHC, HDM, KZ, Schaerweijde, Tilburg, and Rotterdam. Rotterdam start as defending men’s champions. On the women’s side, Amsterdam hold the title.
The season opened on 27 September 2026 and runs all the way to May 2027, with the women’s final set for 23 May 2027.
Why is it this strong?
Because the league is the factory. The Netherlands women’s team are world No. 1 by a huge margin, and the Dutch men sit inside the world’s top five. Season after season, the Hoofdklasse supplies the core of both squads, which is why an ordinary Saturday in Bloemendaal can look suspiciously like an international played at club pace. It doesn’t import its stars. It makes them.
What to watch next
The early rounds are done and Round 4 lands on 18 October 2026. The campaign will twist plenty of times between now and May, but the fixtures neutrals should circle are the clashes between the big four: Amsterdam, Bloemendaal, Kampong and Rotterdam.
SportsCursor will follow the Dutch season round by round in our Leagues section. Understand the Hoofdklasse and you understand where world hockey’s next stars are coming from.
