Tuesday Night in US College Hockey: SNHU End Their Slide, Converse Edge Lander, Wheaton Hold On

Tuesday night in American college hockey was a night for teams who needed a result. Four games, four stories, and not one of them went the way the form book might have guessed.

Southern New Hampshire needed theirs most. The Penmen beat Saint Michael’s 3-0 in Manchester to snap a five-game losing streak, and they did it the hard way: scoreless until the very end of the first quarter, when junior Julia Giampietro scored her first goal of the season off a penalty-corner rebound at 15:00. Zoe Demers doubled the lead 30 seconds into the second quarter with her team-leading seventh goal of the season, and Kim Dull closed it out in the 54th minute with her sixth. Goalkeeper Agustina Miranda Waigand made five saves for her fifth shutout of the season, which leads the Northeast-10. SNHU outshot Saint Michael’s 19-10, have now won six straight meetings with them, and lead the all-time series 16-6. A losing run ends, and a season gets a bit of air back.

Converse and Lander played the tightest game of the night. Scoreless at half-time in Greenwood, South Carolina, with both sides level on shots, saves and corners after 15 minutes. Then Autumn Kern found Ashley Shoffner six minutes into the third quarter for the only goal of the game, and Converse held Lander to two shots and no corners in the fourth to win 1-0. Both sides are now 6-4 in South Atlantic Conference play. Converse go home to face Wingate on Friday night.

Wheaton’s win had the best finish. The Lyons beat the University of New England 2-1 in Norton, Massachusetts, with sophomore Gia Marotta scoring the decider and junior Kelsey Thompson producing a crucial defensive save in the final four minutes to deny UNE an equaliser. UNE threw everything at it late, including a backhand effort from Korisianos that Thompson deflected away, and a goalmouth scramble from Ava Wolverton that Thompson also kept out. Wheaton host Babson on Saturday in their regular-season finale.

And at Russell Sage, Skidmore closed out a 3-1 win in the hosts’ season finale. Colby Paul scored twice for the visitors, who led 3-0 before freshman Sadee Short pulled one back from a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter. Short finished a fine rookie season with 38 points from 15 goals and eight assists, while Sage goalkeeper Olivia Brand made 14 saves and finished 27 stops short of the program’s career saves record. Skidmore outshot Sage 31-3 and held a 10-2 corner advantage. Sometimes the scoreline flatters the losing side. This was one of those nights.
