Chhattisgarh League Night 7: Unbeaten Knights Meet Titans in Top-of-the-Table Clash

This is the night the Chhattisgarh Hockey League has been building towards. First against second, with two league games left after it. Nyayadhani Knights meet Mainpat Titans at 5:00pm PKT (5:30pm IST) on Wednesday in Raipur. The Knights are top of the table and already sure of a semi-final place after Tuesday’s 4-4 draw with Chakradhar Champions, a game in which they led and were pegged back by Yuvraj Walmiki’s hat-trick. They have three wins and a draw from four games. The Titans are right behind them with three wins from three: they beat Bailadila Bulls, thrashed Rajdhani Royals 5-2 and beat the Champions 3-1 on Monday night.

That Monday win told us plenty about the Titans. Sandeep scored twice from penalty corners, and the Titans marked Champions playmaker SV Sunil out of the game, surrounding him with four defenders every time he got near the circle. If they do the same job on Ketan and Chirag, the Knights will have a long night. For our money, the Titans are the one side in this league who look genuinely comfortable against the leaders. A Titans win would take them top with one game left. A Knights win would just about settle first place.

The second game matters just as much, for the opposite reason. Rajdhani Royals meet Bailadila Bulls at 7:00pm PKT (7:30pm IST), and neither side has won a game yet. The Royals have lost to the Knights, the Champions, the Titans and, on Tuesday night, the Strikers. The Bulls have a point from their wild 5-5 draw with the Strikers, when Jaskaran Singh scored all five of their goals, but nothing else to show for their season. Somebody has to break the duck. The Royals’ problem has been at the back, leaking goals in every game, while the Bulls have Jaskaran and not much else. It has all the makings of another high-scoring night in Raipur, and the loser will be left playing for pride in their final league game on Thursday.

Two games left in the league stage after Wednesday, then a rest day on 30 October. The semi-finals are on 31 October, with the final on 1 November, Chhattisgarh State Foundation Day. Wednesday night should tell us who goes into the knockouts with momentum, and who goes in just happy to be there.
