Valencia’s Long Weekend in Catalonia: Two Heavy Defeats, One Brave Carpesa Comeback
It was a long bus ride home from Catalonia for Valencia’s hockey clubs. Two teams, four games, and only one point to show for it. But that one point took some getting.
Valencia CH’s women had the rougher of it. On Saturday they went down 5-1 to Junior FC, with Valentina Gioiosa getting Valencia’s only goal. On Sunday it got worse: Atlètic Terrassa beat them 4-0. Two games, nine goals conceded, one scored. Valencia stay tenth in the Liga Iberdrola, three points above the direct relegation places, and that’s the number that matters now. The gap is still there, but weekends like this eat into it fast.
The men of Carpesa, Valencia’s other top-flight side, had a weekend of two halves. Saturday brought a 5-0 defeat at Real Club de Polo, the kind of scoreline that tells its own story. Sunday, though, was different. FC Barcelona led 2-0 inside the first quarter and looked comfortable. Carpesa had other ideas. Xavier Gaunter pulled one back before half-time, and with thirty seconds left on the clock, Lucas Díaz scored the equaliser. 2-2. From 2-0 down, away from home, against Barcelona. That’s a point worth celebrating, and it leaves Barcelona and Carpesa level on seven points in the Liga IATI.
For our money, Carpesa’s Sunday says more about them than Saturday does. Any side can get thumped by Polo on their day. Coming back from two down at Barcelona takes something else entirely. Valencia’s women, on the other hand, need points soon, because the table below them won’t stay quiet for long.
