403.3 Million Watched the Hockey World Cup, Double the Last Two Combined
Hockey just got the kind of number that changes conversations. The 2026 Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands drew a reported television audience of 403.3 million worldwide, across live coverage, highlights, delayed broadcasts and repeats. That’s double the combined audience of the 2022 women’s and 2023 men’s World Cups.
The breakdown tells you where the sport is growing. India accounted for 30% of the total audience. Latin America and China took 15% each. The Netherlands, Germany and Pakistan were all among the leading markets. Asia carried this tournament’s audience, which is exactly what the FIH’s strategy was designed to do.
The figures come from international consultancy GSIQ, which specialises in audience research and sports data. The FIH’s bet was simple: put the tournament on free-to-air broadcasters wherever possible instead of locking it behind paywalls. More people could watch without paying. More people watched.
It wasn’t just television. The World Cup generated more than 223 million social media views, and Watch.Hockey, the FIH’s streaming platform, pulled over a million views and 20 million minutes watched, with event passes sold in 112 countries.
On the pitch, for the record: Argentina’s women dethroned the Dutch hosts in Amstelveen, winning 3-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw, and Germany’s men retained the title with a 1-0 win over surprise finalists Spain in Wavre.
The take
Hockey’s problem was never the product. Two fiercely contested finals, a surprise package in Spain’s men, a home crowd dethroned in Amstelveen, that was box office. The problem was access, and the FIH just proved what happens when you fix it. FIH president Tayyab Ikram called it “a spectacular celebration of our sport. On the pitch, in the stands and around the world.” The numbers say he can say that.
The question now is what the FIH does with the momentum. A record audience is a one-time headline. Turning 403 million casual viewers into regulars is the actual job.
