Watsonians Hit Glasgow for 16 as Clydesdale Western Run Riot
Sixteen. That was the score at full time in Edinburgh, and it still doesn’t quite capture how one-sided it was.
Watsonians beat bottom side Glasgow University 16-0 in the women’s Premiership on Saturday. Glasgow had already conceded 29 goals before today. They’ve now let in 45. Watsonians, meanwhile, stay top and keep doing what they’ve done all season: score, and then score some more.
Clydesdale Western weren’t far behind. They beat Grange 8-0 at home, and that keeps the pressure right on at the top. GHK were idle today, sitting second after Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Uddingston, a point ahead of Clydesdale but having played two more games. Clydesdale have the games in hand, and results like this one are exactly why the title race is still alive.
Edinburgh University and Western Wildcats shared the points in a 2-2 draw. The Wildcats had beaten Hillhead 5-0 on Tuesday, Kate Holmes scoring a hat-trick with Alex Stuart and Heidi Logan also on target, and that win had lifted them to fifth. A point in Edinburgh keeps them moving in the right direction.
Uddingston won 4-0 away at Hillhead, the other game on the card. The last one, Gordonians against St Andrews University in Aberdeen, had no score posted by late Saturday night.
For our money, the gap between the top two or three and the rest is the story of this league right now. Watsonians and Clydesdale Western are scoring for fun, and everyone else is playing for the places behind them. Sunday is Scottish Cup day, and the only all-Premiership tie in the women’s last 32 is Hillhead at Uddingston. After today, Uddingston will fancy that one.
