NCAA Selection Show: How Sunday Night Decides the 18-Team Field and the Road to Louisville

Sunday night is when the whole college season gets sorted into a bracket. The NCAA Division I field hockey selection show airs at 10 p.m. ET (8 a.m. PKT Monday) on NCAA.com, and by the end of it we’ll know all 18 teams, all eight seeds, and the full road to Louisville.

The field is 18 teams. Ten conference champions get automatic places. Eight more come in as at-large picks, chosen on the season’s body of work. That’s where the arguments start, and this year there are more of them than usual.

Two opening-round games are played on Wednesday 11 November, featuring the four lowest-ranked automatic qualifiers. The winners join the main draw for the first and second rounds on Friday 13 and Sunday 15 November, hosted by the top four seeds.

The semi-finals are Friday 20 November, at noon and 2:30 p.m. ET, with the final on Sunday 22 November at 1 p.m. ET. All three games are at Trager Stadium in Louisville.

The big change this year is the seeding. Eight teams will be seeded, up from four. That matters more than it sounds. A higher seed now means a kinder path and a home game in the early rounds, and it means the committee’s ranking of the top eight carries real weight instead of being mostly ceremonial.

Look at the RPI going into the weekend and the picture is clear. Harvard sit top at 15-1. Maryland are second at 17-1. UConn are third at 14-1. Northwestern are fourth at 16-2. Princeton are fifth at 12-4. UMass are eighth at 17-1. But the RPI is only part of it. The conference finals this weekend will decide the automatic places, and a surprise champion in any league shuffles the at-large queue behind them.

The Division III selection show is Sunday too, at 9 p.m. ET. Division II follows on Sunday 15 November at 8 p.m. ET, with its first round on Saturday 21 November and its finals from 3-5 December in Kansas City.

Watch the show on Sunday night. By Monday morning, every team in the country will know exactly what it has to do.
