Randolph-Macon Break Bridgewater’s Resistance With Two Goals in the Final 6:38
For three quarters, Bridgewater had a plan and it was working. Then the last 6:38 happened, and the ODAC first round belonged to Randolph-Macon.
Randolph-Macon beat Bridgewater 2-0 on Tuesday, with Greene and Dresler scoring twice in the closing minutes after a scoreless, hard-fought game. Until then Bridgewater’s defence and goalkeeper Adel had kept the Yellow Jackets off the board, and the Eagles had generated enough late pressure of their own to make it a real contest. It just was not enough against the weight of chances coming the other way.
The numbers tell the story of the game. Randolph-Macon outshot Bridgewater 36-19 and won the penalty corner count 9-0. Adel made 11 saves in the first half alone, which is the kind of workload that eventually breaks a defence. Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Ambrogi-Torres, by contrast, needed only two saves all game. Bridgewater were not outplayed in effort, but they were outplayed in territory, and in the end the dam burst twice in quick succession.
That is the cruel part for Bridgewater. Hold a team for more than 53 minutes, survive nine corners, watch your keeper stand up again and again, and still go home. Their season ends here, and they will know how close they came to forcing something different. A goal at any point in those three scoreless quarters, and Randolph-Macon are chasing the game instead of breaking it open late.
For Randolph-Macon, this is the kind of win that builds belief. Tournament hockey is rarely pretty, and winning a game you dominate without scoring for so long takes patience. They kept coming, they kept earning corners, and in the final minutes they finally got their reward. Next up are second-seeded No. 19 Washington and Lee on Thursday, and they will know Randolph-Macon do not stop coming.
