Tuesday’s College Play-Off Card: America East Semis, Centennial First Round and a Landmark Trip to Catholic
Monday is about the ACT in Jalandhar, but Tuesday belongs to the American colleges. Three conferences play win-or-go-home hockey on the same day, and the stakes couldn’t be clearer: lose, and your season is probably over.
The headline games are the America East semi-finals. Top seed UMass Lowell host fifth seed Vermont at 1pm, and second seed Maine host third seed UAlbany at 3pm. Vermont just knocked out New Hampshire 2-0 on the road, and UAlbany just survived a 4-3 overtime thriller against Bryant, so neither underdog is arriving quietly. The winners meet in the final on Friday 6 November at the highest remaining seed, and the champion takes the conference’s automatic NCAA bid.
In the Centennial Conference, the first round is on Tuesday too, hosted by the higher seeds. Fourth seed Franklin & Marshall host Haverford, fresh from sealing that seed with a 3-1 win over Swarthmore, and third seed Ursinus host Dickinson. The winners go to the semi-finals on Thursday 5 November, where top seed Johns Hopkins are waiting, and the final is on Saturday 7 November.
And in the Landmark Conference, sixth seed Susquehanna travel to second seed Catholic University in Washington, D.C., for a 7pm semi-final on Tuesday. Susquehanna got there with a 1-0 win at Wilkes in the opening round, Kiara Koeller scoring the only goal in the 13th minute, and they’ve now reached the Landmark semi-finals for an eighth straight season. Catholic at home, under the lights, is a proper test of that run.
Three conferences, five games, one day. Tuesday is when the American college season starts to separate the contenders from the rest.
