Division III Play-Offs Begin: Brockport and St John Fisher Advance in the Empire 8 First Round
The Division III play-offs are under way, and the first round in the Empire 8 produced two shutouts and one very familiar name on the scoresheet.
Third seed SUNY Brockport beat sixth seed Utica 1-0 on Saturday, and the goal came from exactly who you’d expect. Freshman Penelope Schalck, the team’s leading scorer, converted a penalty stroke in the second half for her 12th goal of the season, her fourth game-winner. Brockport move to 13-4 and on to the semi-finals against Hartwick on Wednesday. Utica’s season ends at the first hurdle.
In the other first-round game, fifth seed St John Fisher beat fourth seed Houghton 2-0, knocking out the hosts and setting up their own semi-final trip. The Empire 8 semi-finals are on Wednesday 4 November, with the final on Saturday 7 November, and top seed SUNY Geneseo, 14-3 and unbeaten in conference play, are waiting for the winners.
