Etown Run Riot 8-0, Smith Shut Out WPI, and Thomas Win on Senior Day

Saturday was not kind to everyone in US college hockey. Three games, three very different stories, and one very long bus ride home for somebody in each of them.

Elizabethtown 8, Drew 0

The Landmark Conference first round did not last long as a contest. No. 4 seed Elizabethtown beat No. 5 seed Drew 8-0 in Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon, and the Blue Jays did it in style. They led 2-0 at half-time, one goal in each of the first two quarters, then scored three in the third and three more in the fourth.

Carly Schumacher led the way with three goals and an assist, and Hannah Long added two goals and an assist of her own. Drew freshman goalkeeper Vanessa Pennella made a season-high 14 saves, and she needed every one of them. She made six through three quarters and eight more in the final period as Elizabethtown kept coming.

It was the end of the road for Drew, who finished 8-10, and the end of the college careers of seniors Carolyn Brown, Caroline Larsen, Emma Rider and Liriana Seferovic. Drew were in the Landmark Championships for the third year in a row, which is something to be proud of even on a day like this. Elizabethtown, now 13-6, march on.

Smith 2, WPI 0

Smith against WPI was tighter, but only on the scoresheet. Smith won 2-0 in Northampton on Saturday, and the shot count tells the real story: 19-2 to Smith, 16-2 on goal.

Anouk Bosket broke the deadlock at 33:10, finishing off an assist from Molly van Brunschot, and van Brunschot doubled the lead just two minutes later with an unassisted goal at 35:10. WPI goalkeeper Myles Lakin made 14 saves in a fine performance, while Smith’s Iseul Park needed just two to keep the shutout.

Here is the twist: these two meet again on Tuesday at 7:00pm in the NEWMAC quarterfinals, back in Northampton. Smith take the fourth seed at 8-10 and 5-4 in conference play, while WPI are the fifth seed at 7-10 and 4-5, having come through a four-way tie with Wheaton, Mount Holyoke and Springfield. WPI have three days to work out how to turn 19-2 into something closer. That’s not a tactics problem. That’s a Tuesday problem.

Thomas 1, Husson 0

Thomas College saved the best kind of win for senior day. The Terriers beat Husson 1-0 in Waterville on Saturday, with Samantha Thebarge scoring the only goal, a solo effort three minutes into the fourth quarter.

Thebarge had already saved her side once, with a defensive save on the goal line under a minute before half-time. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Toner made a big penalty-corner save at 10:37 in the first quarter and another late stop as Husson pushed for an equaliser, finishing with two saves in 60 minutes.

Seniors Thebarge, Toner, Tatiana Roque, Isabella Pelletier and Maci Freeman were honoured before the game, and they got the result to match. Thomas now await their seeding for the Central Maine Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Championship, with the championship game set for Sunday 8 November.

Three games, three winners, three very different moods. That is what the last Saturday in October does in college hockey.
