Three Titles in One Saturday: Rowan, Rhodes and Westfield All Seal the Top Seed
Three programmes, three conferences, one very good Saturday. Rowan, Rhodes and Westfield State all finished the regular season as champions, and all three will host their way through the postseason as the No. 1 seed.
Rowan finish perfect in the NJAC
No. 10 Rowan closed out the regular season with a 6-2 win at Kean, and the two names on the scoresheet tell you most of what you need to know. Sophia Weisler and Sydney Kowalczyk scored two goals each as the Profs completed a perfect 7-0 NJAC season. That is a sixth straight NJAC regular-season title for Rowan, who have now won 15 of their last 16 games. The only blemish in that run was a 4-3 loss to No. 7 Salisbury earlier in the week, which ended a 14-game winning streak.
The reward is a bye through the NJAC quarterfinals. Rowan will host the winner of the New Paltz-Kean game in the semifinals on Wednesday 4 November, with another conference tournament title on the line. Teams that host this time of year usually win this time of year. Rowan have built their whole season around that.
Rhodes run the table in the CFHC
Rhodes did it the hard way, or at least the shutout way. The Lynx beat Sewanee 2-0 at Mason Field on Saturday to complete an undefeated 5-0 run in Collegiate Field Hockey Conference play and clinch the No. 1 seed for the CFHC postseason tournament.
Maria Zaporozhski opened the scoring at 12:12 in the first quarter, and Alder Dickey added the insurance goal at 31:40. That was enough. Rhodes improved to 12-1 overall, and the conference tournament is set for 6 to 8 November at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin. A team that has not lost a conference game all season does not need a pep talk. It needs a bus ticket and a hotel.
Westfield win it for a second straight year
Westfield State had five different goalscorers in a 5-1 win at Fitchburg State, and that depth is exactly why they are champions again. Kacey Curran opened the scoring at 8:23, Annalise Lopes made it 2-0 at 11:40, Lilianna Atkins and Sadie Stauffer added goals in the second quarter, and Jocelyn Frein finished the scoring at 54:18. Kendall O’Brien pulled one back for Fitchburg at 55:40, but the game was long gone by then.
The numbers back up the scoreline. Westfield outshot Fitchburg 19-6 and won the penalty-corner count 20-7. The Owls finish 14-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play, clinching the outright league title for the second straight year. They are the No. 1 seed for next week’s conference tournament and will host a semifinal on Thursday 5 November at 7:00pm on Alumni Field, against an opponent still to be decided.
Three titles, three top seeds, three home crowds to come. November is when college hockey gets serious, and these three have earned the easiest road through it.
