India v Malaysia for Top Spot: Sunday’s ACT Triple-Header Decides the Semi-Final Race

Sunday is the day the Asian Champions Trophy league table starts to look serious.

India and Malaysia have already booked their semi-final places. Both have won all three games so far. But the 6:30pm game in Jalandhar is about much more than a dead rubber, because the winner takes top spot into the Mohali knockouts, and nobody wants to limp into a semi-final off a defeat.

India sit top on goal difference, plus 19 to Malaysia’s plus 8. A draw keeps India top. A Malaysia win flips it. For our money, that’s the whole evening right there: the two best teams in the tournament, both unbeaten, playing for seeding and bragging rights with four days to go before the semis.

Korea can’t afford a slip

The day starts at 2:00pm with South Korea against Bangladesh, and it’s close to must-win for the Koreans. They’ve got three points from their 2-1 comeback win over China. Lose this and their semi-final hopes are hanging by a thread. Bangladesh have had a brutal week, 13-0 against India and 6-1 against Malaysia, but they’ve got nothing to lose now, and that’s when underdogs get dangerous.

Then at 4:15pm it’s China against Japan. Japan sit third on six points and a win here keeps them clear in the race for the semis. China are still looking for their first point after three defeats, and a first win would at least give them something to carry into Monday’s game against Bangladesh.

What comes after Sunday

Monday is the last league day: China play Bangladesh, Malaysia play Japan, and India play South Korea. Then the tournament moves to Mohali, with the semi-finals on Wednesday 4 November and the medal matches on Thursday 5 November.

India’s path is simple. Beat Malaysia and they go to Mohali as the team everyone wants to avoid. Lose, and they still go through, but the conversation changes completely. That’s why tonight matters, even with qualification already in the bag.
